Sir James Wattie Place in Hastings to remain closed until next year

Sir James Wattie Place in Hastings will remain closed to the public until after the Christmas/New Year period.

This is due to the ongoing potential asbestos exposure risk following September’s railway station fire.

Hastings District Council closed Sir James Wattie Place to traffic and pedestrians following the fire at the KiwiRail property.

The council says although the railway station itself has now been removed, clean-up work is still being carried out in the surrounding area and the area remains closed to ensure public safety.

“Due to its technical, specialised nature this work will not be able to be completed to meet certified standards before the end of January next year,” the council says.
