Skin care products are not created equal

Jo, skincare specialist from The Beauty Spot in Hastings, shares with us the importance of selecting professional skincare products over those found on the supermarket shelf.

Skin is our biggest and most noticeable organ.

It plays many vital roles. Receptors in our skin send messages to our central nervous system indicating hot, cold and pain. It regulates our body temperature and keeps us in one piece.

An average person has 300 million skin cells and sheds between 30 – 40 thousand dead skin cells every minute! The thickest skin is found on our feet and the thinnest on our eyelids. Our skin completely renews itself every 28 days. If we are unwell or tired, the first place it can show up is on our skin.

With such a vital role to play this amazing organ needs to be kept in top notch condition.

Many of my clients ask me why skincare is so important? And why should I buy professional skincare products? These are questions I hear a lot! Hopefully this article will help you make a more informed decision when it comes to purchasing your next skincare range.

When looking into a new skincare range, ideally you should ask yourself the following questions: What are my main concerns? This may include aging skin, dryness, oily skin, sun damaged skin, skin with pigment problems, and so on.  What am I hoping to achieve? What is my budget?

While it may be convenient and sometimes cost effective to add a cleanser or moisturiser to the trolley while you are doing your weekly grocery shop, there are a lot of positives in looking into the professional range your local beauty salon stocks.

Professional ranges are specifically designed to treat certain skin conditions. Individual products can be prescribed to suit your unique needs. Professional products contain a high amount of ‘active’ ingredients that will help you get the results you desire.

Supermarket products are based on ‘the one size fits all’ approach. They are designed to look nice through clever packaging and smell good, but this will not give you the results they promise!

Often such products are high in water and contain lots of added fillers and preservatives. You may notice that the professional products and the supermarket offerings do list the same ingredients.

The major difference here is that the professional product will have a higher percentage of the active ingredient your skin needs to reach the outcome.

And a little goes a long way! When you use professional products, you will only require a small amount. What may seem a large initial outlay will easily balance out as the product will last you longer and help you achieve your skincare goals. This will save you money!

As a qualified Beauty Therapist, I take pride in getting results for my clients. Here, at The Beauty Spot, we all hold this same value. By using the specially prescribed skincare products after a thorough skin analysis and consultation we can work together in building a plan that will get you the results you desire.

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in day. Everything takes time and commitment!
