IronMāori competitor dies during swim leg of multisport event in Napier

A competitor in the Iron Māori multisport event in Napier has died during the swim leg this morning. 

A police spokesman said they were responding to a sudden death on Hardinge Road, Ahuriri.

"The water-related incident was reported shortly after 7:40 this morning.

"Investigations into the circumstances of the death are ongoing."

A message from Coastguard Hawke’s Bay posted on social media said the person who died was a competitor and the death occurred during the swim leg of the event.

"Firstly our heartfelt condolences to the whanau of the competitor who passed away during the swim leg of the Iron Maori."

Local iwi were in the process of placing a rāhui on all water activites in the Napier area, Coastguard said.

“In the interim as a sign of respect please refrain from swimming, fishing or boating in the area.”
