Tangoio fire under control but smoke expected to remain for days

While the forest fire at Tangoio, north of Napier, is now under control, 55 firefighters remain on the ground, along with forestry crews from Pan Pac working on securing the perimeter of the fire.

Tangoio Settlement Rd is still closed at the junction with Waipatiki Rd and authorities are asking people to stay away from the area while work continues to contain the fire.

Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group says smoke will continue to be generated from the fire over the next few days. It’s coming from ‘skid sites’ (an example is pictured above) and fire crews are currently focused on the perimeter before being tasked on these areas.

Helicopters are on standby but will only be used if the fire flares up. Civil Defence says this is unlikely to happen as the weather conditions are very favourable for firefighting today.
