UPDATE - Sport Codes make call on weekend sport

Sport administrators across the Bay have postponed most community sport this weekend due to COVID19 level 2 status.

The most significant restriction is small gatherings, with a limit of 100 people and this is causing problems especially at facilities that host multiple grades and sport.

Hawke’s Bay Netball has cancelled all netball this weekend. Hawke’s Bay Rugby will make a decision on the final round of the Maddison Trophy tomorrow but has canned junior primary rugby.

Hawke’s Bay Rugby chief executive Jay Campbell says the union is currently working alongside senior clubs to see how senior club games can proceed as planned this weekend.

“The biggest obstacle being the ability to limit people to 100 but we have got a plan that involves a few differing scenarios to see if this can get underway. The safety and well being of our Rugby whanau is always the most important consideration and unless we are satisfied these can be maintained no rugby will go ahead."

Jay says Secondary School rugby is planned to proceed but only at schools that have the ability to adhere to bubble, social contacting and hygiene requirements.

All Hockey scheduled to play through to midnight Friday has been cancelled. Team training's can go ahead as planned but teams must adhere to the Safety Operating Procedure sent to all Club and School Contacts during this window of Alert Level 2 effects.

All Small Sticks Mini Sticks and Kiwi Sticks for Saturday have been cancelled. Hawke’s Bay Hockey is working on a contingency plan depending on what the outcome is over the next days with the levels possible new formats to ensure this age group do not miss out on their sport if we need to.

Sport codes are also busy ensuring all care is taken including asking people to use the NZ Covid Tracing App and register their attendance at facilities.
