Video: Roads, roads, roads – Finance Minister hears what is needed in Hawke’s Bay’s recovery

Finance Minister Nicola Willis says the message she has taken out of a quick visit to Hawke’s Bay today is that a priority “roads, roads, roads”.

Willis met with Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst and Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Alex Walker as well as business leaders. She also visited Taylor Corporation.

Willis said she had been in the region a few times.

“Obviously we've got great local MPs here in Catherine Wedd and Katie Nimon who are keeping me very engaged. This morning I met with Mayor Hazelhurst and Alex from the Central Hawke's Bay and local business leaders, and their message was pretty clear, which was very grateful to the governments for supporting them to continue that silt and debris clean up because that's actually really important to get the land back into operation.”

“They also, of course, are needing to progress that work with those homeowners who can no longer occupy their homes. And the government, of course is committed to help support them in that effort.”

“Finally, their big message today was roads, roads, roads. We still need to get those connections up and running, not just the band-aids and the short-term repairs, but making sure there are resilient transport connections for the future. And I think, look, what I've sensed is that there has been a lot of progress, but there's also been a lot of frustration in the community about the things that have gone too slowly. And there's still a lot to do.”
