Vision for housing in Central Hawke’s Bay adopted

Working together and encouraging greater leadership from central government agencies are key messages in a new ‘Housing Strategic Framework’ aimed at supporting those in the Central Hawke’s Bay community wanting to gain access to a home.

The new Housing Strategic Framework, adopted by the CHB District Council at its meeting yesterday, seeks to bring a co-ordinated approach to work with central government and community organisations to deliver on four goals to address housing for those most in need over the next ten years.

The council says achieving the strategy’s vision of ‘supporting our community to thrive through access to a home –  He āhuru mōwai, e taurikura ai te hāpori’ will be transformational for some, simply meaning they will have access to the basic need of housing.

Completing a strategy for housing in Central Hawke’s Bay has been a Community Development Committee priority since the adoption of the Long Term Plan in July 2018, when the council heard a clear need from the community that suitable homes were in short supply.

The strategy sets out clear initiatives to work together to improve the complex issues that families face seeking a home. Housing in Central Hawke’s Bay has become increasingly challenging over recent years, particularly for those renting or facing greater challenges in life as demand for property has continued to increase.

“People being able to access the basic of a home will be transformational for our Central Hawke’s Bay people,” says councillor Kelly Annand, chair of the Community Development Committee.

“This new strategy creates the platform for Council to clearly advocate and seek greater leadership from Central Government Agencies to improve housing in Central Hawke’s Bay.”

The strategy seeks to address emergency, transitional and social housing over ten years, focussing on delivering on housing issues that impact the most vulnerable in our community first.

The initial step in launching the strategic framework will be the holding of a housing hui with key agencies and organisations in the coming weeks, to see tangible change delivered for those most affected by housing in our community.
