Warning to watch for trains as regular service on Napier-Wairoa line resumes

After a seven-year break, KiwiRail freight trains are returning to the Napier-Wairoa railway line on Saturdays and Sundays, beginning this Sunday.

The company says initially, one of the main sources of freight on this line will be logs from local forests, bound for export through the Port of Napier.

These logs will be loaded onto KiwiRail trains at the company’s new Wairoa yard.

Regular log trains will be running, and special rail vehicles will also travel on the railway track for maintenance activities.

KiwiRail is warning that with the track back in regular use, it’s important to take special care around the region’s railway tracks and level crossings.

“Whether you’re driving or on foot, please remember to look both ways for trains,” the company says.

“Trains can come at any time, from either direction.  Always cross with care at an official crossing.”
