Taradale women's footballers book semi-final berth

Taradale's Federation Cup women's football side beat Whanganui 2-1 in their Knock Out Cup quarterfinal at Taradale Park on Sunday.

Whanganui started well taking an early lead when Taradale (pictured above) failed to clear a corner and Whanganui bundled the ball into the back of the net. Taradale were stung into action and put Whanganui under some huge pressure resulting in a hand ball in the 18-yard box.

Taradale player-coach Aleesha Heywood calmly converted the penalty to bring the teams back on equal terms. Despite some good play from both teams the score remained 1-all at the interval.

Taradale brought on some fresh legs at halftime and this helped them gain the upper hand in the second half although Whanganui did have some strong periods of play as well. Captain and current golden boot leader Cara O’Neill managed to get her name on the scoresheet again to help Taradale progress to the semi-finals.

Player of the day for Taradale was 15-year-old left back Megan Thomas.

Taradale now have a week off as most of their team head down to Wellington to play in the National Age Group Futsal Championships before playing Whanganui again but this time in a Federation Cup game in Whanganui.
