Takapau Terrors aim to bring trophy back to CHB

The Takapau Terrors will be on a redemption mission at this weekend's 12th annual Peter Barry Memorial demolition derby teams event in Palmerston North.

"While we've won it before we only finished 10th last year. So this time we're on a redemption mission ... we want to bring the trophy home," Terrors captain and former New Zealand Superstock class champion Randal Tarrant said.

"A lot of the other teams have recruited stockcar drivers so this will be the toughest event, and with 22 teams the biggest in its history," Tarrant explained.

Like the Peter Barry Memorial Teams stockcar event, which will be staged at Meeanee this weekend, the Palmy event is run in memory of popular Central Hawke's Bay businessman and farmer, Peter Barry, who died after being injured at the 2009 ENZED Superstock Teams Champs in Palmerston North.

"Dad [fellow Terror and one of the best derby racers in the business] got Peter into racing for the Terrors. He then got into stockcars and superstocks," Tarrant recalled.

"Peter's son Sam would have been racing for us this weekend but he has got the North Island TQ champs at Meeanee," Tarrant said.

He pointed out the Terrors weren't too concerned about which teams they meet this weekend.

"As long as we can top the points in our group and make the top eight so we are in the hunt on finals night we'll be happy," Tarrant said.

Qualifying is on Friday night and finals are scheduled for Saturday night.

The Takapau Terrors team is:

Randal Tarrant, Beatle Tarrant, Zach Lawrence, Daniel McIntyre, Stu Smith.
