Teen equals Napier Golf Club record

Way to redeem yourself Hawke's Bay golfer Zack Swanwick!

A day after shooting a two-over par 74 during pennant team trials on his Napier Golf Club's Waiohiki course 15-year-old Swanwick (pictured above) shot a nine-under 63 on Sunday to equal the course record set by former New Zealand Seniors representative and seven-time senior club champion Bruce Middlemiss.

"I wasn't happy with my round on Saturday. So afterwards I spent almost four hours with Andrew [club professional coach Henare] working on a few things.

"It paid off. Everything felt right as I focused on one shot and one hole at a time," Swanwick recalled today after club officials completed the verification process with the record equalling feat. The club's 2020 senior men's champion and youngest player to win this title shot nine pars and nine birdies.

"No hole stood out as a highlight for me. I was just happy with my consistency throughout the day ... while it was pretty hot there wasn't much wind so conditions were ideal," Swanwick recalled.

His previous best round at the club was a 65 two months ago. Swanwick, who plays off a plus three handicap, was playing with clubmates Cordell Henare and Jared Lines in another round of pennant trials.

Hastings will be the defending champions when the Hawke's Bay pennants competitions begin on March 7.

A Taradale High School Year 11 student, and son of former Black Sox softball team pitcher Vincent Swanwick, Swanwick, hopes to be a professional golfer in the future.

On Thursday he will be among the starters in the Palmerston North-hosted round of the Charles Golf Tour which will see him play four days of golf if he makes the cut on Friday.
