Winning 100th eludes Hawke's Bay United co-coach
Hawke's Bay United football team's co-coach Bill Robertson was a man of mixed emotions after today's 2-0 loss to Waitakere United in Auckland.
"I'm proud to bring up my 100th game for the side but disappointed we didn't get the result we wanted on the occasion," Robertson (pictured above, photo Steph Gunther) who also plays centre back for the team, said.
"But both Chris [co-coach Greatholder] and I were pleased with the effort put in by the boys. It was a reasonable team performance," Robertson said as he reflected on the ISPS Handa Premiership 13th round match at Seddon Fields.
"Overall we created a number of good chances but weren't able to take them. While Waitakere United managed to score a couple of goals we had more chances.
"It was a tough one and we were a little bit unlucky. That's been the story of our season but I was proud of the effort. Another day we could have got the game," Robertson explained.
The 36-year-old first played for Hawke's Bay United in 2009. He hopes to be playing in the New Zealand Football Championship for another season or two yet but it won't be for Thirsty Whale Hawke's Bay United as the competition will become club based from next year.
The first half of today's game was scoreless. Hawke's Bay United forward, Gavin Hoy, who was playing his 50th match for the visitors, was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 35th minute when he was fouled in the box.
Waitakere United scored their goals in the 65th and 67th minutes. Their second goal was from a penalty.
Robertson refused to single out any individuals who shone for the visitors but saluted the collective effort. Hawke's Bay United's faint hopes of a semifinal berth disappeared with the loss and they will host Eastern Suburbs from 4pm at Bluewater Stadium next Sunday in the final match of the fanchise's history.
