Bay indoor bowlers to have crack at national title

Hawke's Bay indoor bowls representatives Michael Brown and Tina Sinclair will represent the province at the New Zealand Mixed Pairs final in Masterton on Sunday.

Skip Brown of the Waipawa club and lead Sinclair of the Taradale Club qualified with some impressive displays when winning the Hawke's Bay and Central Zone finals last month. On their way to the Central Zone title they beat combinations from Manawatu, Wairarapa and Bush Ruahine.

There will be several New Zealand, North Island and South Island representatives in Masterton on Sunday.

"We're good enough to give them a shake up but we don't have any high expectations," Brown said.

He has played indoor bowls for 20 years and considers his two national Catholic pairs titles, one with fellow Bay rep Emma Ludeman last year and another with fellow Bay rep Mark Appleby previously as the highlights of his time in the sport.

Last year Brown also finished second in the singles at the Napier association's prestigious Easter tournament which attracts players from throughout the country.

Sinclair took up indoor bowls in her youth and as a teenager won the Feilding junior singles title. But as life got busier indoor bowls was no longer a priority for her.

She started playing again this year and at the weekend was a member of the Hawke's Bay team which beat Bush Ruahine 92-76 in their first outing of the year.
