Devery rules as Hastings spoil Texans Centennial celebrations

Captain Jacob Devery was the hero as his Hastings Rugby and Sports team spoilt the Napier Technical Old Boys club's centennial celebrations today.

The Magpies hooker, Devery (pictured above), again played No 8 for his club and he scored three tries as the unbeaten defending champions beat the Texans 38-5 in a Maddison Trophy fifth-round clash at Whitmore Park. It was the feature match of the Texans centennial celebrations weekend which was originally scheduled for last year but postponed to this weekend because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hastings Rugby and Sports manager James Rosenberg praised the visitors set-piece dominance. While Devery deserved player-of-the-match honours lock Jessie Lesa-Sipaia was also inspirational in the host pack.

First five-eighth Jordan Thompson-Dunn and second five-eighth Danny Toala impressed with their tactical kicking. Winger Johnny Saifiti was thirsty for work in the winning backline.

Texans head coach Kerry Lewis said all of his forwards deserve praise for the manner in which they battled against the best pack in the comp. Captain and lock Elijah Martin led his troops by example and prop Mark Braidwood can be proud of his 60 minutes.

Scorers:
Hastings Rugby and Sports 38 (Jacob Devery 3, Miracle Lolofie, Jason Long, Joe Taafi tries; Connor McLeod 3, Danny Toala cons), Napier Technical 5 (Kyle Corneilssen try). HT: 14-0.

                                            NOBM 33 MAC 11
Napier Old Boys Marist second five-eighth Migao Lauano had a winning 300th appearance with this Tremain Field victory.

Lauano (pictured above) played the entire match. Loosies Will Tremain and Chris Johnston joined loosehead prop Dom Devine as the best of the Green Machine forwards. Halfback Josh McIntyre operated well in the difficult conditions.

                                           TARADALE 17 CLIVE 12
Like Hastings, Taradale Rugby and Sports, maintained their unbeaten run with this Farndon Park victory.
However Taradale missed out on the bonus point for four tries which was a tribute to the courageous defensive work from the riversiders who maintaIned their top four berth. Taradale co-coach Tim Combs was also impressed with the defensive work of the visitors and their ability to control the match and put the hosts under pressure.
Lock Angelo Mufana produced a player-of-the-match display for the Mighty Maroons. Fullback Dylan Ramsay and first five-eighth Cam Robinson also made the visitors MVP list.

"Yes our defensive work was pretty good. It was only a couple of errors which gave them the edge," Clive manager Dean Hales lamemted.
Lock Josh Greening and loosehead prop Zac Southwick impressed in the Clive engine room. Halfback Trent Hape was a busy back.
Scorers:
Taradale Rugby and Sports 17 (Gene Syminton, Brayden Cunningham, Hemaua Samasoni tries; Cam Robinson con), Clive Rugby and Sports 12 (Josh Kaifa, Anthony Wilson tries; Tiaan Falcon con). HT: 12-0.

                                               TAMATEA 30 CENTRAL 19
Tamatea Rugby and Sports posted their first win in the competition with this Bill Mathewson Park victory and took the gloss off Central loosie Tomo Fogarty's 100th appearance.

The hosts resorted to Golden Oldies scrums from the 45th minute mark. This move didn't go down well with Central Rugby and Sports manager Ian Large.

"Our scrum was dominant till then. We're pretty disappointed Tamatea took that approach as this is premier rugby," Large said.

Magpies first five-eighth Lincoln McClutchie directed the hosts attack with aplomb. Second five-eighth Jordarn Harmer and Magpies hooker Kianu Kereru-Symes impressed with their defensive work for Tamatea while openside flanker Arama Kite had his best game of the season for the hosts.

Fogarty (pictured above) was a workaholic for the entire 80 minutes. Magpies tighthead prop Joel Hintz and Magpies lock Tom Parsons were both prominent in the Central pack.

Scorers:
Tamatea Rugby and Sports 30 (Donovan Godinet, Jordarn Harmer, Mataeus Marsh, Lincoln McClutchie tries; McClutchie 2 pens, 2 cons), Central Rugby and Sports 19 (Joel Hintz, Ruan De Lange, Warwick Slingsby tries; Tate Harte 2 cons). HT: 14-12.
