Video: Rescuing Waikahu - from Waitangi Regional Park to a nice warm bed

A gorgeous dog who became a celebrity amongst regular visitors to Waitangi Regional Park and Waikahu Wetlands after she appeared after Cyclone Gabrielle has now been rescued thanks to dog trainer Augusta Grayson and an amazing group of volunteers.

Having been spotted in the area by council workers post cyclone, the dog made itself at home at the park, scrounging for food at nearby Biorich Compost and the surrounding area.

Thanks to Ātea a Rangi Educational Trust, this beautiful dog now has the name Waikahu, in recognition of the area she had previously made her home.

She had an obvious fear of humans which made the rescue much harder, but thanks to Grayson's incredible dog knowledge and a little bit of patience, the beautiful dog is now in foster care and a Givealittle page has been set up to help with her medical costs, ongoing care and rehabilitation.

The gorgeous dog is believed to be around two years old, which makes the fact that she survived in the park for so long in such appalling conditions even more unbelievable.

According to Grayson it will take time for her to adjust to domestic life and to fully trust humans, but she is on the right path.
