Closure of Awatoto Road at SH51 to be extended three days to enable roundabout completion

Work to construct the Awatoto Road leg of the new SH51 roundabout is nearly complete, and the roundabout will be fully completed and ready for use before Easter.

The NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said in a statement that to enable contractors to complete this final leg, the daytime closure of Awatoto Rd at SH51 had been extended from 8am to 4pm until 1pm on Saturday 23 March 2023.

“Road users will still be able to drive along SH51 in both directions with temporary speed limits. The daytime detours via Te Awa Ave and Waitangi Road will remain in place while this work is completed, and the onsite signage will remain in place.”

The statement says that once the roundabout is complete, contractors will begin work to complete the final stages of the safety improvements project.

“These are expected to be fully complete by June 2024, and include installing the roadside barrier and median barrier in the area near the roundabout, and on the stretch of SH51 between the roundabout and Ellison Street and building a safer crossing point from Awatoto Road to the beach domain suitable for prams, wheelchair users, cyclists and pedestrians.”

Other features include minor linemarking near Awatoto Road and Waitangi Road,         installation of pou and seat near the roundabout, and native planting between SH51 and existing railway line.

“Please note, as work is dependent on many other factors such as weather, dates may change at short notice and we will keep you updated.”
