Covid-19: 283 new Hawke's Bay cases

Hawke's Bay has 283 new Covid-19 cases, and 11 people in hospital.

Nationally there are 9,109 community cases, 481 hospitalisations and 20 deaths.

Of the deaths, one person was from Northland, one from Auckland, two from Waikato, two from Bay of Plenty, four from Tairāwhiti, four from the Greater Wellington region, five from Canterbury and one from Southern.

One person was in their 50s, three in their 60s, three in their 70s, eight in their 80s and five were aged over 90. Of these people, 12 were women and eight were men.

"This is a very sad time for whānau and friends and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this time. Out of respect, we will be making no further comment," the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

With the new school term underway, the MoH said it was a timely reminder for people to continue following public health advice to stay at home and stay away from school or work if they're feeling unwell.

"Another way to protect you and your whānau is to get vaccinated if you haven't already done so. Vaccination remains our best defence against Covid-19 and getting boosted is an important way people can protect themselves, their whānau and their friends from the virus.
