Cyclist in critical condition after being hit by train in Napier

A cyclist has been taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition after being hit by a freight train in Napier this morning.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of State Highway 51 and Ellison St just before 8.30am.

A St John spokesman said an ambulance had taken one person from the scene to Hawke's Bay Hospital in a critical condition.

The road is closed and there are diversions in place at the intersection of State Highway 51 and Te Awa Ave, and at Warren Street/Marine Parade.

KiwiRail Chief Operating Officer Todd Moyle said the incidents like this are "extremely upsetting" for all those involved, and their thoughts are with the family and friends of the cyclist.

“In line with our standard practice, our driver and all of our staff involved will be offered support from KiwiRail."

He said the train was a freight service travelling from Napier to Hastings.
