Five injured in fatal Napier crash remain in hospital

Five people remain in hospital following a fatal car crash over the weekend, as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. 

One person died at the scene of the single-vehicle crash on Shakespeare Rd, Napier at 11.50pm on Saturday.

The vehicle had nine occupants, police confirmed. One was uninjured, while seven were taken to hospital.

A Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke's Bay (formerly Hawke's Bay District Health Board) spokeswoman said two people, one male and one female, both in their 20s, have been discharged from Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

Two females, one aged in her 20s and one in her teens, are in serious but stable conditions at Hawke’s Bay Hospital. While a male in his 20s also remains at Hawke’s Bay Hospital and is stable.

A male in his teens was transferred to Wellington Hospital yesterday. 

A female in her 20s was transferred to Christchurch Hospital yesterday, where she remains in a critical condition, a Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury spokesperson.

A Police investigation into the circumstances of the crash is underway.

A police spokesperson said they would like to hear from anyone who witnessed a dark blue Honda CRV driving erratically in the Napier CBD prior to the crash at around 11:50pm on Saturday, or who has dashcam, or other footage of the vehicle.
