July at The Globe Theatrette

In the midst of a winter where we’re more or less stuck on these Islands and can’t escape on overseas adventures, we’re bringing you stories from all across the world to keep you entertained
and informed. Travel with us to a fishing village in Japan, small-town Ireland, a village in the mountains of Southern France, and the glorious shores of Italy.

Johnny Depp has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, but in MINAMATA (8 July, M) he reminds us that, when he wants to, he can be a serious actor with an important story to tell. Minamata is a fishing town in Japan, and also the name of a crippling disease related to mercury poisoning caused by its local chemical company. Depp plays Life photographer W. Eugene Smith who with his poignant photos immortalised this incredible case of industrial negligence, political cover-up and human tragedy. Fascinating, moving and infuriating.

We love Irish films, and this year we’re lucky enough to get a steady supply of these coming through our doors. Next up is DATING AMBER (15 July, R16), a cheeky comedy set in the mid-90s, a time when being a gay teenager in small-town Ireland was apparently not a picnic. School friends Eddie and Amber decide to keep their respective sexualities secret and pose as a straight couple to avoid suspicion. Not a great plan. This is an R-rated comedy, so yes it gets a bit sweary and rude, but its heart is big and firmly in the right place.

Contrasting a gorgeous setting in the mountains of southern France with the horrors of World War Two, WAITING FOR ANYA (rating TBC, 22 July) is based on the novel by War Horse author Michael
Morpurgo. Noah Schnapp (Will from Stranger Things) plays a young shepherd boy who teams up with Angelica Houston and Jean Reno to smuggle Jewish children across the border into Spain. Fresh
Fiction called it “a tender tale about a community coming together to do the right thing”, which sounds right up our alley.

Our annual CINEMA ITALIANO FESTIVAL (29 July – 5 August) is a great opportunity to delve into Italy’s rich and interesting cinematic history. In this year’s marathon-style festival (a different film every day for eight days straight), we have a few classics you may not have seen yet (MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE starring Sophia Loren, PINOCCHIO starring Roberto Benigni, I AM LOVE starring Tilda Swinton), the latest cinematic highlights, and the return of PAVAROTTI, our most popular documentary in recent years.
