Resource consent lodged to turn Rush Munro's site into petrol station

The site which housed Rush Munro's in Hastings for 90 years could be turned into a 24/7 petrol station if resource consent is approved.

Rush Munro's announced last month it was moving to Albert Square - near Hastings CBD - after its lease was not renewed by new owners of the site.

“We are sad to have to leave under the circumstances, particularly as the gardens have become an irreplaceable part of so many childhood memories," owner Vaughan Currie said at the time.

The ice creamery was first opened in Hastings in 1926 by Frederick Charles Rush Munro and his wife, Catherine. It has operated from Heretaunga St West for 90 of its 96 years.

The property is owned by BRO Heretaunga Ltd which is based in Auckland, according to company records.

A resource consent application was lodged on August 9, 2022, with Hastings District Council to convert the site into a 24/7 petrol station.

Fuel company NPD will operate the petrol station if the plans are approved.

Plans for the site include a proposal by NPD Ltd to “construct, operate and maintain a self-serve 24-hour fuel facility”, according to a resource consent lodged with the Hastings District Council.

The application includes a forecourt with six double-sided fuel pumps and a 5.9-metre-high canopy cover.

“Except for the residential properties to the southwest to the site, the characteristics of the locality of the site are motor-orientated commercial service/retail activities,” the application said.

A Hastings District Council spokesperson said the site is zoned Commercial Service Zone.

"This zoning provides for service stations as a permitted activity specifically on Heretaunga St West subject to the standards of the District Plan and any relevant RMA National Environmental Standards. There were a number of standards triggered requiring resource consent.

"Council’s planners within the Planning and Regulatory Group are currently assessing the consent. Decisions on it are pending soon."
