Teen arrested after ramming police car and fleeing on foot in Central Hawke's Bay

A 17-year-old male was arrested after allegedly driving into a patrol car and fleeing on foot in an attempt to evade police.

Central Hawkes Bay Police Sergeant Neil Baker said at about 11.45am on Wednesday Waipukurau staff identified a vehicle of interest, believed to be a stolen van reported earlier, on SH2 heading onto Mt Herbert Road.

"Police signalled for the vehicle to pull over but the vehicle did not stop," he said.

"Staff followed the vehicle but quickly became concerned by the manner of driving, as the vehicle drove through the CBD, and Police pulled over."

Baker said a short time later, the vehicle was located in Ennisclaire Place, which is a dead-end street.

"Police blocked entry into the street, but in an attempt to evade Police the vehicle drove into a patrol car, causing damage to both the patrol car and the alleged stolen van.

"The vehicle was recovered abandoned in the Waipukurau township a short time later, and a 17-year-old male was located on foot and arrested a short distance away."

He was due to appear in Hastings Youth Court today on driving charges.
