All Hawke's Bay final at Spillane Cup

Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby hooker Jacob Devery produced a player-of-the-match display at No 8 as his Hastings Rugby and Sports team today secured a berth in tomorrow's New Zealand Marist Spillane Cup final in Taupo.

A New Zealand Marist representative for the past two seasons and the Maddison Trophy-winning captain last year with Hastings Rugby and Sports, Devery (pictured above), scored three tries in his club's 38-24 victory against Hamilton Marist. He was part of a dominant scrum.

Fullback Jayden Rihia was another to shine for Hastings and joined prop Jason Long and centre Gideon Kautai as the other try scorers. Halfback Connor McLeod did well to convert four of the six tries in windy conditions at Owen Delany Park.

Hastings Rugby and Sports led 21-5 at halftime. Hamilton Marist scored two late converted tries to close the gap but the damage had already been done.

Hastings Rugby and Sports manager James Rosenberg said lock Emil Crichton was taken to hospital with a suspected broken hand and substitute lock Danya Tulou left the field with a knee injury.

"We might be short of players tomorrow and might have to borrow a couple from other clubs," Rosenberg said.

Defending champions, Napier Old Boys Marist, will take on Hastings Rugby and Sports in tomorrow's 1.30pm final after a come-from-behind 27-26 victory against Hutt Old Boys Marist. Hutt Old Boys Marist led 26-15 at halftime.

"The boys showed a bit of resolve to come back in the second half," delighted NOBM coach Ellery Wilson said.

Fullback Michael Buckley was outstanding for the Green Machine and saved four tries. Centre Pedro Bezanilla also impressed in the winning backline and scored two tries.

Promising openside flanker Paul Lapa had a huge workrate. Veteran blindside flanker Pouvi Fatialofa scored a late try which was converted by new first five-eighth Jonty Stuart to secure the win.

Stuart is a Feilding High School product and is in the Hawke's Bay union's academy. Busy No 8 Ricky Hayes and second five-eighth Paul Bickle scored NOBM's other tries.
