Horse of the Year cancelled in wake of Cyclone Gabrielle

One of Hastings’ most significant events, the annual Land Rover Horse of the Year, has been cancelled in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle.

The event, which brings millions of dollars into the local economy and attracts equestrian enthusiasts from around the country, was due to be held from 7-12 March.

The Mayor of Hastings Sandra Hazlehurst says that given the scale of the disaster in Hawke’s Bay, it was the right thing to do.

“We thought 2023 was going to be our year for normality and getting back to people being able to come again to Hastings for Horse of the Year, but it is now cancelled.”

Hazlehurst says the reason is because of the vast number of people who come into the region for big events.

“We haven’t got the accommodation for our visitors. We have to look after our own people who are hurting at the moment. And hopefully when we get back to normal and get some more accommodation up and running, then we can revisit and have our events.”

A statement on the official Horse of the Year Facebook page says it is “with huge disappointment” that the event is cancelled.

“We understand this will be a massive disappointment for many who have planned and/or qualified for their journey to #LRHOY. We share the sadness that another cancellation brings, especially for those riders whose eligibility for classes will change before 2024.”

“We empathise with our wonderful trade supporters and suppliers, especially those in affected areas, who have suffered business disruption and losses. Over the next seven days, we will work with all our stakeholders to look at potential scenarios to provide some alternatives,” the statement said.

“Our thoughts remain with all those that have suffered from the devastation that these weather events are causing. “

Land Rover Horse of the Year is scheduled to be back 5th to the 10th of March 2024.
