Temporary road closure for multi-million dollar water infrastructure works

Ongoing works to upgrade essential water infrastructure in Havelock North will see Campbell St closed to traffic from the Joll Rd roundabout for an estimated two weeks.

It is part of Hastings District Council's work to strengthen and improve water safety, capacity and supply resilience, and provide water services to support future growth in the area.

HDC Group Manager Asset Management Craig Thew said over the past year, there’s been a significant amount of activity in Havelock North upgrading the drinking and stormwater network. This has included installing new drinking water pipes, such as the watermain on Te Aute Rd that was laid late last year, as well as other drinking water and stormwater upgrades.

The overall project of upgrades in this area is due to be completed in mid-October this year. While this is slightly longer than anticipated, Mr Thew said the opportunity was taken to add extra works to the programme to better future-proof the infrastructure.

However, he says there will be no additional cost to ratepayers.

"The closure enables the various pieces of work to be completed in the area; some of this completing some of Council’s planned works [and] some enabling privately funded work to complete connections that support current developments in the Havelock North CBD."

The overall project cost is $2,727,357.40. Of this $2,315,020.93 is for Drinking Water funded from council's growth budget and $412,336.47 for Stormwater, 28 per cent of which has been funded from the growth budget and 72 per cent from the renewal budget.
