Month to savour for Bay golfer

Hawke's Bay golfer Zack Swanwick has been selected to attend a national junior camp in Hamilton next month.

A quick glance at his achievements over a recent four-week period and it's easy to gauge how the 15-year-old Napier Golf Club member got the nod. The Andrew Henare-coached Swanwick (pictured above) was a member of his club's senior men's team which won the Hawke's Bay pennants title.

Swanwick then won the Onga Onga 27-hole tournament by six shots. This was followed by victory in the Maraenui Open tournament final with a 5 and 4 win against Waikato's James Fellows-Ford.

The month ended with Swanwick, a Taradale High School Year 11 student, winning the Horowhenua Open in Levin last week.

"I was pretty stoked with the month. Winning in Levin was pretty special as that's Andrew-s home town. He was among the spectators and he has won that tournament several times.

"Andrew's is one of a few good names on the cup," Swanwick explained.

The son of former Black Sox softball pitcher Vincent Swanwick, Swanwick, attributed a couple of lessons he had with Henare before the month began as the keys to his success.

"I was hitting the ball a lot better ... closer to the pin and a lot longer than usual. I'm pretty sure I'm the first golfer to win the Onga Onga, Maraenui and Horowhenua tournaments in the same season," Swanwick said.

After the camp, his priority tournaments will be the Kapi Tareha Memorial on his home course at Waiohiki and the New Zealand Under-16 Championship at Titirangi. Both of these tournaments are in August.
