Kahungunu 10 year anniversary of Fish Hook Summit deferred

This year’s Kahungunu Fish Hook Summit that was planned to take place on Thursday 28th May 2020, would have marked its 10 year anniversary.

The first summit was held on 11 March 2011 and was initiated by the iwi’s fisheries directorate, Dr. Adele Whyte and Senior Analyst, Ngaio Tiuka.

The purpose of the Kahungunu Fish Hook Summit, is to provide an opportunity for ngā uri o Kahungunu to come together to:

· Connect – Rediscover whakapapa and reignite our whakawhanaungatanga;

· Celebrate – Hapū development plans, aspirations and achievements;

· Explore – Collectively work together to reclaim waterways;

· Share – Ideas and enthusiasm for maximum impact; and

· Feast – To provide sustenance for the work ahead.

Over the years the Summit has focused on relevant issues that has drawn in new interest each year. Due to Covid-19 the 10th year event has been deferred to 2021.

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is a Mandated Iwi Organisation/Authority. Ngāti Kahungunu is the third largest iwi.

Geographically the tribe has the second longest coastline in the country from Paritū in the North to Turakirae in the South.

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated maintains an independent position to provide research, advice and advocate for the interests, rights, values, beliefs and practices of Ngāti Kahungunu alongside whānau and hapū.

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated would like to acknowledge all whānau, marae, hapū claimant groups, environment and natural resources groups, Taiwhenua, supporting organisations, other iwi , all people past and present who work toward preseving and protecting our natural resources.

The inaugural fish hook summit in 2011. Many people have passed on since this occasion. You are valued and we thank you for your efforts.
