Review: Are Mamasdonuts really ‘donuts you’ll remember for a lifetime’?

Mamasdonuts, which recently opened in Hastings, promises “donuts you’ll remember for a lifetime” every time you walk through the door. And, by the looks of things, it’s an expectation they're exceeding.

Smiling customers, smiling staff, and 10 flavours of freshly made donuts creates a cheerful atmosphere that feels very welcoming. Their recipe for success is fool-proof, but how about their recipe for donuts?

Well that seems pretty spot on as well, with 10 flavours to choose from a donut for everyone is available, with each of them being as unique as the next.

They offer: 1. Original Glazed | 2. Blueberry Custard | 3. Salted Caramel | 4. Choc Mousse | 5. Lemon Passion | 6. Maple Glazed | 7. Choc Custard | 8. Sugar Cinnamon | 9. Apple & Custard | 10. Choc Nut | And these change every month.

Customer Ewan Williams told me the Blueberry Custard was his favourite, I can’t blame him.

However, they do come with a cost. A box of 12 flavours will set you back $35, averaging $2.91 a donut which I think is reasonable. If you’re feeling less adventurous or maybe work forgot to pay your sick leave, they have an option to buy a 12 pack of Original Glazed Donuts for $25, and if you’re somewhere in between, there’s a $30 option which gets you 6 flavours, and 6 originals. Individually; a flavoured donut is $3.50, and an original is $2.50.

The Choc Mousse.

After a full 50-hour week, I decided to go ahead and splash out on the 12 flavoured donut option, only so I can give a better review of course…  It surprises me to say that my favourite was the Original Glazed Donut. The texture was unique to the others, and my taste buds found the flavour heavenly. The light sweetness of the dough sets the donut up perfectly to see you off with a soothing vanilla punch, compared to other donuts that knock you out with your first bite. I was alone on this however, with my taste testing partners opting for the Blueberry Custard, the Choc Mousse, and the Apple Custard.

The Apple & Custard.

My least favourite was very unsurprising from a personal perspective. The Lemon Passion. Obviously this donut has a very niche taste that you’ll either love, or you’ll hate. I’m sure those that enjoy passionfruit, will overly enjoy this donut.

I’m not the only one that enjoyed their experience at Mamasdonuts. The four-week-old Hastings branch of their business has so far received 34 reviews on Facebook, and has a 4.7 star rating. The 0.3 being complaints about que time and opening hours, but when you’re making between 4-5000 donuts a day that people love, both complaints can be justified.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed my experience at Mamasdonuts The donuts were tasty, the staff were great, and timed seem to fly by when you have the lucrative smell of freshly made donuts filling your nostrils. You can also see everyone working in the background which adds an extra taste of appreciation to each donut. Eating 12 donuts was certainly enough to quench my donut thirst, but I’m sure I’ll be back.
