Napier dog owners urged to keep pets away from waterways

Napier City Council is warning dog owners to keep their pets away from Anderson Park waterways and all other waterways in the city until further notice.

The council has had reports of two dogs becoming ill after swimming at Anderson Park.

It says dog owners should contact a vet immediately if their dogs show the following symptoms after drinking from, swimming or paddling in any of the city’s waterways:

  • Vomiting/being sick, diarrhoea, seizures/fitting, weakness/collapse/unconsciousness, disorientation/confusion, drooling, or breathing difficulties.

The council says as a precaution, it is also recommended that people avoid contact with the water.

“We are currently taking test samples and will provide a further update when we know more,” the council says.
