Christmas Day tragedy at Pourerere Beach, Central Hawke's Bay
One person has died following a diving incident at Pourerere Beach, Central Hawke's Bay this morning.
Emergency services attended the incident following a report around 8:50am "concerning a person who had been in difficulty in the water".
A police spokeswoman said medical assistance was provided but the person sadly died at the scene.
Central Hawke's Bay District Council confirmed the tragedy on its Facebook page this afternoon.
"It is with our deep respect and sympathy that we share that there has been a tragic death at Pourerere beach," it said.
Mana Whenua have placed a rahui from Pauanui Beach to Aramoana Beach from 12pm today for five days.
"Diving and collecting of kaimoana is prohibited during this time."
The death will be referred to the Coroner.
