Fire crews working to extinguish "significant" blaze on ship at Napier Port

Fire crews are working to extinguish a "significant" blaze that has broken out on a ship berthed at Napier Port.

Fire and Emergency NZ Hawke's Bay Area Manager Ken Cooper confirmed the fire was "significant" and said twelve appliances are currently at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 10.46am this morning.

"Our priority is to bring the fire under control.

"There is a significant amount of smoke coming from the vessel so we are obviously asking people to stay away from the area," Cooper said.

A spokeswoman for Napier Port confirmed the fire is on a ship at 4 Wharf.

"We’re under the fire service command and they are currently managing the situation.

"The crew who are currently within their 14 days isolation have been transferred to another separate facility on port. Everyone is safe and accounted for," she said.

A police spokeswoman said Breakwater Rd and surrounding roads are closed, and traffic management is in place.
