Hastings Girls' students give MP positive feedback on free period products

Free period products are starting to be delivered across participating schools in Hawke’s Bay.

Tukituki MP Anna Lorck, who met with Hastings Girls High School leaders to welcome the initiative said she was very pleased to hear from students directly about how free period products would make the difference for some girls now coming to school or not.

“Young people shouldn’t feel they need to miss out on school because they can’t afford period products. That’s why we’re ensuring students can access these when and where they need, so they can focus on what’s important to their education.”

Ms Lorck said it was fantastic to see a positive uptake of the initiative happening locally as part of the Government’s nationwide rollout which is part of wider efforts to combat child poverty, help increase school attendance, and make a positive impact on children’s wellbeing.

"Nearly 95,000 9-to-18-year-olds may stay at home during their periods due to not being able to afford period products. By making them freely available, we support these young people to continue learning at school

"Feedback from schools and Kura shows there’s an urgent need for free period products, so this first phase of the nationwide roll out is focused on getting products into schools and kura as simply and quickly as possible."
