Hawke's Bay Police investigating after body found in burnt vehicle

A body has been found in a vehicle that caught fire last night, police say.

Detective Inspector Martin James, District Crime Services Manager, said in a statement today that they are investigating after a body was fouund in the vehicle, which caught fire at a property on Irongate Road West.

The fire was reported to Police at 8.20pm yesterday.

"Officers have today been conducting a scene examination at the property where the car was located."

"Work is under way to formally identify the deceased and complete next of kin notifications."

"Police are also working to establish the circumstances of the person's death, which at this stage is being treated as unexplained," said James.

As part of their enquiries, Police say that they are also conducting a scene examination at a property on Sunderland Drive, Flaxmere.

"Residents on Irongate Road West and Sunderland Drive can expect to see a continued police presence in the coming days, and we thank them in advance for their support and cooperation."
