Hawke's Bay police warn of increased presence ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations
Revellers bringing in the new year in Hawke's Bay can expect to see an increased police presence.
Detective Inspector David de Lange says they want people to enjoy their New Year celebrations in our beautiful region, while also staying safe.
"We understand people will be seeking a beachside location for their New Year's Eve celebrations, but police want to remind people of the temporary and permanent liquor bans in a number of holiday areas," de Lange says.
Liquor bans will be in place in parts of Hawke’s Bay, including the centres of Napier and Hastings, Ahuriri, Westshore, Taradale, Havelock North, Mahia, Central Hawkes Bay and Waimarama.
"A sure way to ruin a good night out is a trip to the emergency department or a visit to the police station, so make sure you have a plan when you head out for the night, including some simple ways to stay safe while you’re out and to get home safely."
de Lange says it is important to: look after your friends and stick together, make sure your phone is fully charged before you head out, plan how you are getting home at the end of your night, and have the cash, eftpos card or app to pay for transport. If you have concerns about someone’s behaviour, call the police.
“We want people to have fun, but to be responsible and be aware of the liquor ban areas.
“If you’re found to be breaching the liquor ban, you won’t just lose your alcohol, you could also face a fine.”
Motorists will also see an increase in road patrols and police will take a zero-tolerance approach to impaired drivers.
“We’ll be highly visible to make sure people are driving safely and without impairment.
You can expect to see more checkpoints on the roads.
“However, don’t get complacent. You can expect to see police patrols anytime, anywhere, often in locations you least expect us to be, so please take your time and drive to the conditions.”
