"He will be sorely missed": Hastings District Councillor pays tribute to younger brother killed in car crash

Peleti Oli's family has already suffered more than most over the years, having lost two members to tragic circumstances. Now, they are preparing to bury his younger brother.

Fili Alainuuese died when the gold SUV he was travelling in struck a tree on Ormond Road between Omahu Road and Evendon Road on Wednesday afternoon. His sister and her friend survived the incident but remain at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Peleti, a Hastings District Councillor said he was in "shock" at the loss of his younger brother, who had his whole life ahead of him. He paid tribute to the 28-year-old, who will be remembered by those closest to him as a loving father and family member who would do anything for those around him.

"He was a very loving family member and would always be there at the drop of a hat just to help anyone. He was very loyal, very humble, gentle-natured and will be sorely missed."

Peleti says he was "always smiling" and "loved to have a good time and a laugh".

During his time, he proved to be a good sportsman, having played basketball, rugby and volleyball. "But the thing he loved most was music," he said.

He was "very proud" of his Samoan heritage, and to be from Flaxmere, and "loved" to represent both. He grew up in Flaxmere and attended Flaxmere Primary School but then moved to Australia to pursue opportunities. He returned to New Zealand a couple of years ago.

Fili leaves behind his young daughter who went to school in Napier. “He loved her very much, and she’ll be missing her Dad.”

It is the second brother Peleti has lost, after losing his younger brother Someh in 2012, and cousin soon after.

"When Someh passed away, Fili took it the hardest and he never really got back to normal because he missed him so much. Fili always thought of Someh and was always mourning his loss because they were so close but I feel like they're together now and their reunion makes me happy."

He honoured his older brother through his hip-hop music. "He dedicated his time to his music and lived the memories of Someh through his music."

Peleti last saw his brother on Monday, when they watched another sibling play volleyball.

"After Someh's passing, everyone got a lot closer, so every time we spoke we would always tell each other how much we loved each other. So in terms of saying goodbye to my brother every time it was like we were saying goodbye to each other."

Losing two brothers has made Peleti realise the importance of making the most of your time here on earth with those that you love. "That’s a message I want to leave with everyone. Make sure you go out of your way and make time to make more memories with loved ones because life is truly short and you never know when they’ll go.

"All the other issues in life and drama doesn't really matter when you lose a loved one. So if anything, I will continue on honouring my brothers now through my barbering journey."

A Hawke's Bay District Health Board spokeswoman said two women, both in their 20s, remain in hospital - one in a serious condition and the other stable.

In a statement, police said they would like to extend their sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased at this difficult time.

Police continue to make enquires and would like to speak to any people travelling on Ormond Road towards Omahu Road between 2.40pm and 2.50pm.

"These motorists may be important witnesses, particularly if they have seen the gold SUV travelling in the same direction," police said.

Information can be provided to Police on 105, using file number 210210/2782.
