Napier marks International Coffee with a Cop Day

Napier City Council is marking International Coffee with a Cop Day in a bid to make residents feel safer.

On the first Wednesday in October, police officers park up in a coffee shop and welcome the public to share their concerns, ask questions or make suggestions to help keep their city as safe as possible, for locals and visitors.

As Safer Napier Ambassador, Napier Mayor Kirsten Wise is a big supporter of the initiative and says it ties in well with other safety initiatives in Napier such as the upcoming Ambassadors and CCTV programme.

“This is a great way to break down any barriers and have some valuable conversations about how to make Napier an even safer place to be."

“It’s an opportunity for people to have easy access to the Police outside of the police station setting, which can be intimidating and difficult to access.”

“Safety is a team effort, we are part of that team, our police colleagues are part of the team and our community is an essential part of the team,” says Mayor Wise.

Over tea or coffee, people can discuss issues, get safety tips or find out more about what’s involved in becoming part of the Police service, in a relaxed environment.

Coffee with a Cop will be held today (Wednesday, October 6) from 10am-11.30am at local cafés; Kolachi CBD, Pie and Patty Pan Marewa, Streetwise Pandora, Fig & Crumb Pirimai and Switch Roasters Onekawa Industrial.

The event was started in the United States in 2011 and now takes place in 15 countries, including New Zealand, Canada, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Australia.
