VIDEO: Sinkhole destroys part of busy Napier road

Napier City Council is working to determine the cause of a sinkhole that has destroyed part of one of Napier's main roads.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advised motorists at about 3pm this afternoon that Hyderabad Rd was closed between Corunna Bay north and Corunna Bay south for southbound traffic.

It will remain closed overnight.

A detour is in place for southbound traffic, via SH50, turning left on to Corunna Bay, then left back on to SH50. The northbound lane remains open.

A spokesperson for the agency says they are providing assistance to Napier City Council to manage traffic in the area around the sinkhole, "as council contractors work to repair a sewer main and the subsequent sinkhole in the road".

A Napier City Council spokesperson says the sinkhole has a visible diameter of about 1 metre but contractors are investigating what the situation is below the road.

"Our teams are working on this with urgency and we expect them to be on-site, working under lights, into the night to rectify the situation.

"We are investigating the situation and it would only be speculation to say how it has happened."

She says teams on site are diverting the wastewater.
