Watch Live: 102 new community Covid-19 cases

A Waikato Covid-19 case undertook permitted travel to Hawke's Bay last Friday prior to becoming a confirmed case, the Ministry of Health has revealed this afternoon.

The case returned to Te Awamutu before testing positive. Both contacts have been tested and have returned negative day six results.

There are 102 new cases in the Delta community outbreak – the largest number in a single day since the pandemic began.

Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield gave the update in a press conference this afternoon.

Today also marks the worst day for hospitalisations, with 46 people in hospital with Covid-19. Seven are in intensive care or high dependency care units.

As at 10am, 62 of these cases are linked - including 30 household contacts - and 40 remain unlinked, with investigations continuing to help determine their connection to the outbreak.

Dr Bloomfield said the sharp rise in case numbers is a reminder of the infectiousness of the virus and particularly the Delta variant, and the importance of vaccination as the best protection.
