Central Hawke's Bay to host 2020 'Spirited Women’ adventure race
Central Hawke’s Bay has been announced as host of the fifth edition of Spirited Women, a unique all women’s adventure race, to be held from March 27 to 29 next year.
The announcement was made at the completion of the 2019 Spirited Women race in Gisborne yesterday.
Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Alex Walker says the region is delighted to be hosting a major New Zealand adventure race.
“Our rural community loves the outdoor physical challenges that our beautiful district offers – we can’t wait to share our secret slice of Hawke’s Bay with competitors and visitors alike.”
Spirited Women is designed to be social and fun yet challenging event, and attracts more than 1,600 competitors each year.
Teams of four women must stay together throughout the race as the teams complete several trail walks or runs, mountain bike and kayaking legs as well as mystery activities. There are three race categories – a short, medium and long course.
In a unique twist, the exact race location is always kept top secret until the night before the race starts with competitors only knowing the 2020 race is based somewhere in Central Hawke’s Bay.
Spirited Women, owned by Dare2Sweat events, has hosted four events prior to the 2020 race. The last two years have sold out within hours of entries opening.
Hawke’s Bay Tourism is working in partnership with Central Hawke’s Bay District Council, Napier City Council and Hastings District Council to deliver region-wide support to the event organisers.
“Competitors will spread themselves across the region, through accommodation, shopping, eating and drinking. The economic impact of the event will benefit much of Hawke’s Bay, which is fantastic,” says Annie Dundas, General Manager for Hawke’s Bay Tourism.
