Magpie Long's weekend to remember

Talk about a weekend to remember for Hawke's Bay's Jason Long.

After a quality 27 minutes off the subs bench for the Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby team in Saturday's 47-12 Ranfurly Shield win against Manawatu in Napier Long recorded two wins and a fourth placing in a 25-strong superstock class at the Meeanee Speedway season opener on Sunday night.

"Not too bad a weekend eh," the humble 28-year-old Long said afterwards.

Last night was the second round in the Lucas Oils Superstock Series. Long missed the first round in Palmerston North on Saturday night as it clashed with his rugby.

Unlike the majority of his opponents who had at least two previous meetings this season, Long, was having his first meeting.

"I was lucky the rugby was on Saturday and speedway on Sunday. I won't be able to race for the next three weeks as it is the other way around. If it was teams racing I would not have raced," Long explained.

He agreed it the Magpies continue to go well he may not be able to race again until December.

"I seem to go well after long breaks. When I won the national title in 2019 I had not raced for five weeks before the meeting," Long recalled.

His Hawkeyes teammate, Quinn Ryan, won last night's other heat. Long won last night's round, new Hawkyes squad member Hayden Hart was second and Ryan third.

The most spectacular roll of the evening came in the superstock class. Palmerston North's Peter Bengston's night ended when he rolled on the first lap of the first heat.

The second round of the Quin Buildings Super Saloon Series was also staged. Eight cars fronted for the round.

Heat one saw Hawke's Bay's two-time national champion Steve Flynn take the winn from grid four. Flynn had won the Palmerston North-hosted first round on Saturday night by four points from event sponsor Mick Quin, who is Hawke's Bay-based but Palmerston North contracted.

Quin was first across the finish line in heat two but relegated two places for an infringement. This gave the victory to Stratford's Joe Ingram who finished third in Palmy.

Mount Maunganui's Matt Smith won the third heat from grid four.

With 41 stockcars fronting five heats were staged to allow each driver to have three races. Heat one saw Palmerston North's Kyle Rowe triumph over the host track's quiet achiever Grant Hollyman.

Hawke's Bay's Richard Prince took out heat two while fellow host track driver Dominique O'Brien was a convincing winner of heat three. Regular Meeanee Maulers team racer Regan Penn took out heat four and heat five was cancelled when the track became too dangerous.

Ten drivers fronted in the saloon class and Hawke's Bay's Palmerston North contracted Josh Smith continued his fine form from last summer with wins in all three heats.

There was plenty of stirring in the 17-strong streetstock class, most of it from host track driver Tim Towler. Victory laps were had by Hawke's Bay's Brent Redington and Darren Melling and Kihi Kihi's Daniel Curran.

Seventeen drivers competed in the TQ class where wins were recorded by the Hawke's Bay trio of Tony Meechan, Kris Gillies and Duane Todd.

Before the meeting started several award presentations were made because the Hawke's Bay Speedway Club's annual prizegiving, which was originally scheduled for August, had to be cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It wasn't a surprise when Long's Hawkeyes teammate Randal Tarrant, the winner of the national superstock championship title last season, received the trophy for the competitor of the year.

Life memberships were awarded to super saloon class driver Grahame Strong, a former 3NZ and 2NZ in the class as well as a second generation racer, and long-time committee member Bruce Salisbury who is known as the "Chicken Man" at Meeanee because of the popular chicken and chip meals he sells.

Certificate of recognition awards were presented to long-time committee member Debbie Melling, who has held the secretary and treasurer roles at various times during the last 25 years, and superstock class rep for the past 25 years, Barry Sklenars (pictured below right with club president James Buckrell, left, and track announcer Mike Wilson) , who has also been involved with the club for more than 50 years.

Track announcer Mike Wilson also told the crowd the bank at the southern end of the venue will be known as "Frank's Bank" in memory of long-time hot dog seller at Meeanee, Frank Gerbes of Gala Caterers, who died earlier this year.
