Wairoa assault victim critically injured

A Wairoa man was in a critical condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital last night after being serious assaulted in Wairoa on Thursday evening.

Acting Detective Sergeant Brent Griffiths said police were called to a property in Campbell Street in Wairoa just before 6:30pm, following reports of two males fighting.

On arrival, police located a 30-year-old man with serious injuries to his chest and head.

He was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter, with life-threatening injuries.

Acting Detective Sergeant Griffiths said police located a second man, aged 38, at the property with minor injuries.

The two men were known to each other.

The 38-year-old was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He is in custody to appear in Gisborne District Court next week.

Police from Gisborne and Wairoa were conducting a scene examination yesterday, and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
